IP Address Representations

Something I am conscious of is this blog becoming very me, me and more me. I make no excuses for this but I do worry that without a certain amount of technical know-how to be had I will lose visitor loyalty. It's now been more than a month since my last article and I really need to get some more pushed out. So, I've bought a book and I plan promise to deliver the next SVG installment within the next seven days.

I just finished another Tube-Book which meant flexing bits of my brain not used in a while. Maths was one of my strongest subjects at university and it's nice to be reminded of some of the things I had forgotten I ever knew. Talking of numbers, did you know that an IP address is just the dotted-decimal base 256 representation of the actual number stored in DNS. So, the host www.notes.net with IP address 205.159.212.30 can be represented as (205 x 2563) + (159 x 2562) + (212 x 256) + 30 which equals 3449803806.
