BBCi is Greatest Website In The World

While I sit here watching the BBC try the seemingly impossible task of choosing the greatest Briton ever I am reminded of a comment I made recently. Can't remember where it was but I made the sweeping statement that bbc.co.uk is the greatest website in the world. A whole Web of its own. Not merely a front to a news service but the online existence of an institution. It never ceases to amaze me at the number of levels this sites posesses. Aside from the news service (available in 43 different languages) there's a huge encyclopedic amount of knowledge and public service material. Among the variety there is:

Not only this wide range of categories but "Aunty" manages to prove she's not as stuffy as we might imagine by leading the way technologically.

If anybody disagrees that the BBC's online presence is the greatest, or knows of another site that comes anywhere near, I'm all ears.

BBCi is unrivalled for this methinks. There are millions of sites that do what they do better than BBCi could, but BBCi has the BREADTH and SCOPE that no other rivals. Other "got everything" websites that compete with BBCi are commercially funded and therefore cannot guarantee the same service level, impartiality, or altrusistic stuff that BBCi can. Codestore beats BBCi for Domino and Internet development. But BBCi beats everything, Codestore at al, for doing EVERYTHING. And its commercial independence means that it can be trusted implicitly.

  1. For demo purposes, I choose BBC first and Codestore 2nd. I might start using www.JakeHowlett.com if he ever starts blogging something useful - just kidding Jake! ;o)

  2. The BBC is second to none in catering for a diverse variation in ethnic/regional audience tastes, mainly due to it's method of funding.

It's just a shame that an organisation that can produce such a valuable internet resource can put such rubbish on during 'peak' hours. Do they think that the only people that watch TV in the early evening are Fame Academy fodder? Why is it that intelligent programming is shuffled off to the 10.30 / 11.00 slots?

  3. And even more important: they did develop not only one but a couple of the very best loudspeakers ever made on this planet. :-)

  4. OMFG! Never bothered to look up bbc's web site before. I think the fact that this blog is off topic just makes me feel all the luckier that you posted it.

If only they didn't think they had to change the colorscheme on the homepage every time I visit!

  5. Yep, I'll go along with that. At the end of every programme (worth watching that is) there is some link to a BBC page of even greater interest. There is hardly a day passes that I don't visit it, well a 'working day' anyway.

Jake's list didn't mention that one can catch up on "The Archers" as well.

  6. The CBeebies section is very good too... ;-)
