Results Of PC Naming Competition
Almost forgot about the "competition". There were loads of responses and most were really good but I've decided to go with the names of UK Shipping Regions. Thanks to my friend and former colleague Phil King for the highly original idea (fix! I hear them shout). The names are:
Machine | Name |
Server 1 | Fastnet |
Server 2 | Rockall |
Dell Laptop | Lundy |
Apple iBook | Cromarty |
Apple iPod | Bailey |
Desktop | Dogger |
I know what you're thinking. What on Earth are all these weird names? Well, every night on BBC Radio 4 they read the Shipping News. I'm normally in bed at this point, listening in the hope it will bore me to sleep. Until now I had no idea, nor interest in, what all these strange names related to. Here's a map that helps make sense of it all.
This month's Esquire magazine has the Apple iPod listed as the "thing every man should own". I agree. I also agree with this AppleMatters review in that Apple really, really need to get rid of the gaps between songs. It's ruining most of my albums.
Talking of my albums, I've finished converting them all to MP3 files. As promised here they all are. Not in XML as promised but the voyeurs out there should be able to see clearly enough.
I myself have only one computer and I call it NCC1701D, because it's the 'third generation' computer I own.
If you're a 'Trekkie' you'll undoubtably know where the serial number comes from :-)
I am proud to say I didn't have a clue what you were talking about. Luckily a certain geek sat next to me did.
I thought I was the only one to own that northen exposure cd (the blue one) thats one of my favourite CD's.
I am woundering though to you own any B12 cd's :}
Ask the "geek" next to you if you don't
I was going to suggest using the names of the Osbournes...Ozzie, etc.
Did you see the movie Shipping News?
The book was much better though ;-)
Yes Abby, and I liked it to. Films like that make a nice change to the usual Hollywood pap. Might give the book a go on your reccomendation...
Can someone explain the third generation thing ???
NCC 1701 is the registration number of the Federation Starship Enterprise. Enterprise "D" was the ship in "The Next Generation".
"The Shipping News" was a fairly popular radio program here in Canada, at least among the crowd who can appreciate something other than television sitcoms. I wonder if the Newfoundland setting might not have made a difference there -- things always seem to have a bit more bite if they are part of your experience, and Atlantic Canada is full of towns and villages where life is not at all unlike what is portrayed in the book. It certainly took my mind out of the city...
Good skills on the B.M.Ex CD EP as well. Not sure who is being the more obscure now.
Jake, you have some shocking musical tastes there! :p
But also some gems. K&D sessions would have to be one of my favourite albums.
Also like to thank you for the heads up re the gaps in tracks. I was about to purchase an iPod in the coming week or two, but will hold off now. My collection of CDs is roughly 1500 with 90% being mixed sets where a gap would kill it. :(
Jake, for God's sake come back soon, the web's a scary place for those who only go to codestore ;o)
