Surfing in Florida
Planning on doing some surfing in Florida, it's good to hear there are a few wi-fi hotspots laid on by our hosts. Known collectively as the "Attendee Networking Area" they can be found at the following locations:
- Outside the Copa Banana in the Dolphin hotel
- Adjacent to the fountain in the Swan hotel
- In the Wireless Cafe - adjacent to the Product Showcase
Obviously I have no idea exactly where these places are so I need some help. I knew the Warchalking crew had tools to find wi-fi access points, but I'd never bothered looking for one. Then I read this post on Volker's site:
... This is so easy nowadays. Open a stumbler, drive through a residential neighborhood until you pick a a WLAN and connect.
After a quick Google for "mac stumbler" would you believe what I found: MacStumbler! Which I guess is similar to what Volker is using here. You can get Windows versions from NetStumbler, it's just that I chose to take the iBook as it's about half the weight of my Dell.

You should have received an email from LotusSphere about the LotusSphere Workplace portal that has been set up along with a user id and password.
Check it out for the future of Notes & Domino on the web. Shame the online awareness (Sametime) isn't implemented in it though.
It does have a good session management portal on it though for booking sessions and planning your time.

While there were "designated areas" for the wireless last year, in most cases the coverage extended into the session rooms. I sat in a number of sessions and was able to ST people back home...
Duffbert,s right. As ime went on last year the covereage slowly increased. In fact, by the end of the conference I think nearly all of the Swan&Dolphin were covered inside.
Shame it wasn't outside though :-)
Has anyone tried the Kensington stand-alone sniffer (33063 WiFi Wireless Network Detector)? It'll save a lot of laptop battery time whilst ignoring WEP- or other- secured points.

Akshully, it doesn't -- but it does ignore everything that isn't 802.11(b or g). I was lied to by a local equipment reviewer. Walking the snowy streets with an open laptop is just too much trouble, so I broke down and bought one. You can still hack WEPWAPs you wouldn't have known about otherwise.
