She's a Fool, But I Love Her
Have you seen the latest craze whereby you take a photo of what's behind your laptop and use it as a desktop background? The idea being that the screen appears transparent. There's some amazing examples of it on this stream at Flickr. Well, I was bored enough to have a go at my own the other day. Because I didn't spend much time on perfecting it I didn't expect it to catch anybody out. Well, it might have been two days late, but I actually managed to make a fool of somebody yesterday.
There are two girls in the house: Quinn, who's 10 and Karen who's 30. They're probably both about as tech-able as each other. Which one do you think fell for it when I told them (separately) that the screen was see-through?
Maybe it's because I spend so much time pulling Quinn's leg that she expects nothing less of me. As she pointed out - if it were an "invisible screen" why are there icons on it. Karen however was literally gobsmacked. She stared in wonder, moved closer, sat down and said "Wow! That's amazing!!" without a hint of sarcasm. She really thought is was the next big thing in laptop screens and it wasn't until she leant forward and put her hand behind the screen - expecting to see her fingers through it - that she realised. Oh, how I laughed. Now, in her defence, it was late on Sunday night, just before she went to bed and it does look a lot little more convincing than in this photo. Anybody could have fallen for it?

That's a really interesting idea, I'm sure lots of people passing by would be gawking at my screen if I did something like that...Kind of a cool effect for the user too...even though you know the secret!

Ah, obviously one of the more enlightened members of the human race.
What you need is an "active" wallpaper and a webcam. Then you can REALLY show what's behind the screen on the screen. Probably slightly elaborate for an April Fools gag though ;)

A colleague of mine used to web-cam his clients a great deal. Depending on the client, and on his mood, he would select the "wallpaper" behind him from a series of pull-down rollerblinds.
Best was a beach scene, which he would augment by dressing in a loud surfing shirt and sipping a cool drink while discussing the more arcane aspects of the deliverable.
